Hosted by The Atlas Studios and run by filmmakers John Barker and Ziggy Hofmeyr, the First Wednesdays Film Club started as an informal gathering of filmmakers and has become a reputable launching platform for new local and international films that do not make it to the commercial film circuit.
Since its inception in 2004 the film club has become a popular screening event and though it was created to attract local filmmakers, its reach has extended to include a broader gathering of cinema lovers interested in watching films of all genres that are usually not available locally.
The club is also a place for local filmmakers to exchange ideas and network. It partners regularly with organizations and institutions such as the Gauteng Film Commission, Alliance Française, Big World Cinemas to host to host screenings and create a platform for young filmmakers. As co-host Jonathan Gimple once said the film club has become an “eclectic incubator that shares resources to help independent filmmakers get better exposure and support".
